São Paulo Research Foundation

The State of São Paulo corresponds to 3% of Brazil's territory, but the state accounts for 1/3 of Brazilian GDP and produces over 40% of the country's scientific output.  The state's research and innovation ecosystem is extremely rich. In and around São Paulo, you'll find some of the best universities in Brazil, including the University of São Paulo (best university in Latin America in 2024, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking), Unicamp and UNESP. Paulist science can benefit from the support of FAPESP.

FAPESP is a public foundation, funded by the taxpayer in the State of São Paulo, with the mission to support research projects in higher education and research institutions, in all fields of knowledge. The constitution of the State establishes that 1% of all state taxes belong to the foundation and the government transfers these funds monthly. The stability of the funding and the autonomy of the foundation allow for an efficient management of the resources that has had a sizable impact. FAPESP allocated $ PPP 400.5 million to the funding of 19,692 research projects in 2021, for growth of 3.5% compared with 2020. Investment in the training of human resources in 2021 corresponded to 36.4% of annual disbursement to fund 11,469 scholarships.

Since 2011, FAPESP has been organizing FAPESP Week around the world. These FAPESP “weeks” give visibility to the research developed in the state of São Paulo and supported by FAPESP, strengthen existing collaborations with the partners involved in these FAPESP Weeks and create new cooperation dynamics based on the international cooperation tools of FAPESP and research and innovation funding agencies.

FAPESP Weeks are organized by FAPESP and partners in the chosen country. They can be held in a single institution/city or in two or more institutions/cities in the same region/country. Each FAPESP Week brings together leading researchers from São Paulo and colleagues from the target region in various sequences: presentations, round tables, startup pitches, networking moments. In recent editions of FAPESP Week, FAPESP has also promoted the participation of startups that receive support through one of the various programs created by FAPESP to encourage innovation.
