He holds undergraduate degrees in Pedagogy (1969) and Law (1969) from the University of São Paulo, an undergraduate degree in Letters from the Nossa Senhora Medianeira dos Padres Jesuitas School of Philosophy (1970), a master’s degree in Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University (1985), a master’s degree in Political and Economic Sciences from the University of Coimbra School of Law (1970), a master’s degree in Law from Harvard University (1978) and a doctorate in Law from the University of São Paulo (1973).

He served as Director of the USP Law School (2006 - 2010) and is currently president and full professor at the University of São Paulo, member of the Board of Directors of the Fulbright Commission for Educational Exchange between the United States and Brazil, member of the Administrative Tribunal of the Latin American Economic System, member of the Permanent Review Court of Mercosur and member of the Inter-American Juridical Committee of the Organization of American States.

His vast experience in the field of law includes an emphasis on public law, and he works mainly in the areas of International Law, Public International Law, Private International Law, Competition Law, the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), International Treaties and Antitrust.
