A member of the FAPESP Board of Trustees since August 2007, he is the executive director of the International Relations Committee at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine (FMUSP). 

Trained in medicine at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul Medical School, he received the titles of Professor Emeritus at the Ribeirão Preto Medical School of the University of São Paulo and Professor Honoris Causa at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. He was president of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences from 1993 to 2007, and director of the Hypertension Unit of InCor from 1985 to 2010.

Among numerous prizes and awards, he has received: the National Order of Scientific Merit, (1994); the Commendation Medal by the Military Engineers Legion of Merit (1999); TWAS Medal Lectures, from The World Academy of Sciences, (2005); the Anísio Teixeira Award from CAPES/MEC (2001); the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Award (for Medicine and Public Health) from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) (1998); the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Inter-American Society of Hypertension (1997); the Mühlbock Award from the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS) (2007); and the Dedication to Research Award from the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC) (2005).
