José Arana Varela
Prof. Varela is a member of the Chemistry Institute at UNESP where he serves as Professor of Physics and Chemistry of Materials and Director of the Multidisciplinary Laboratory of Functional Materials.
He obtained his BS at University of São Paulo Institute of Physics and MS at the Technological Institute of Aeronautics, both in Brazil. He obtained his PhD in Materials Science at School of Engineering of the University of Washington in Seattle, USA.
His research has emphasizing synthesis, processing and characterization of inorganic materials for several applications such as varistors, sensors, ferroelectric memories, photonic among others. This work has been extensively published in form of articles (580), book chapter (3), and patents (12), which have been highly cited (7536 citations; h = 38).
Prof. Varela received many honors including Member of the World Academy of Ceramic, Member of Academy of São Paulo State, Fellow of the American Ceramic Society, and recipient of Scopus Prize, Epsilon de Oro Prize, Brazilian Talent Prize.
He served as President of Brazilian MRS (2010-2011), Vice President of FAPESP (2008-2010) and is serving as Chief Executive Officer of FAPESP since 2012.
