We are inviting applications for one postdoctoral fellowship at the Astronomy Department of the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences of the University of São Paulo (IAG/USP), Brazil.

Goal: The main goal of this project is to investigate several open questions related to small groups of interacting galaxies such as inverted metallicity gradients, their relation to the kinematics of the system, formation of new tidal dwarf galaxies due to strong interactions, etc, using imaging and spectroscopy obtained at Gemini and SOAR. In particular there are new data cubes obtained with a Fabry Perot instrument that works with ground layer adaptive optics and laser (SAM-FP) mounted on the SOAR telescope, which can bring important information for these systems. The PD will be asked to reduce Fabry perot data and do the analysis of kinematic maps. He/she will also be asked to reduce Gemini GMOS data for analysis of the metallicity gradients in the systems.

Sample selection: We have observed about 10 interacting systems with GMOS and several of them with a Fabry Perot system. These are nearby objects chosen to have information in other wavelengths.

    What will actually be done:

    Kinematic analysis:
Using a single Gaussian fitting procedure, we will use the Halpha emission line to derive the velocity field of the ionized gas in the interacting systems. The observed velocity field should be compared with a rotating-disk model, in order to search for non-circular motions. These non-circular motions will provide us with information regarding the presence of gas flows and kinematic anomalies. In addition, a detailed kinematic modelling will give us information regarding the strength of the interaction in the system: we will be able to search for variations in the position of the kinematic position angle. Finally we will look for tidal dwarf galaxies in the vicinity of the main galaxies.

Publications: This work would lead to a series of publications on each system separately and possibly two other papers with the discovery of candidate TDGs and other newly born systems and one about metallicity gradients in the systems.

Link with GMT: This work may produce a list of TDGs that may be later observed with one of the GMT instruments.

Schedule: This is a pos-doc plan for 2 years of work, given the work plan defined above. In the first year, the data already taken with Gemini and SOAR will be reduced and analysed, for at least 2 interacting systems. One paper is expected to be published on the individual systems and possibly a second one can be started on inverted gradients, depending on the results. In the second year, the Fabry Perot data will be analysed in a search for new Tidal dwarf galaxies. This work will then be published.

Please send a CV and research statement (including past work and future plans), with a maximum of five pages, and two letters of recommendation to jrgodoy@usp.br and opportunities@iag.usp.br by September 15, 2016.
