The Obesity and Comorbidities Research Center/OCRC, located at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to participate in a research program aiming at the discovery of new chemical entities for the treatment of type II diabetes and other diseases related to obesity.

OCRC is one of the Research, Innovation and Dissemination Centers (RIDCs) funded by FAPESP and the position is available for up to 24 months, starting not later than June, 2016.

According to the latest WHO estimations, approximately 350 million people will suffer from diabetes by the year of 2025, which could have a severe impact on human health. Moreover, the overall mortality directly and indirectly associated with obesity is rapidly increasing worldwide and it is considered a global epidemic.

This is a challenging opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team of investigators and collaboratively address critical research questions and create new possibilities for the treatment of type II diabetes and other diseases related to obesity.

The candidate has to have a PhD degree, a strong background in synthetic organic chemistry and has to be willing to work in a multidisciplinary environment. Previous experience in medicinal chemistry research is desired but not mandatory.

The selected candidate will be responsible for the design and synthesis of a small library of compounds with potential anti-diabetic activity. He/she is expected to interact with groups located at the Medical School and at the Institute of Biology, UNICAMP, in charge of the biological tests, such as insulin secretion assays and activation of insulin signal transduction in isolated cell systems and living rodents.

The synthetic work will be carried out at the Institute of Chemistry, UNICAMP, under the supervision of Professors Ronaldo A. Pilli and Julio C. Pastre, with access to OCRC facilities, including continuous flow systems.

Candidates shall send the following documents to pilli@iqm.unicamp.br (subject: OCRC_post doctoral application) until March 28, 2016:

    a) Statement of interest in the position.
    b) Two recommendation letters.
    c) Short summary of the PhD research.
    d) Short CV.
    e) Summary of research proposal (a brief description about potential family of compounds which could be synthesized and evaluated, including a synthetic plan).

For more information about OCRC, visit www.ocrc.com.br.

This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationalities. The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP's Post-Doctoral fellowship in the amount of R$ 6,143.40 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity.

More information about the fellowship is at: www.fapesp.br/en/5427.
