Alguns desses propósitos devem nortear a pesquisa aqui delineada.

We hereby announce the opening of a Post-Doctorate Fellow position at the School of Education of the University of São Paulo. The post is linked to the São Paulo Research Foundation-FAPESP Thematic Project entitled “Knowledges and practices at the borders: for a transnational history of education (1810-…)” coordinated by Diana Gonçalves Vidal. Within the main project we welcome applications for the development of the subproject “Classifications and Limits: the transit and the multiplication of diagnostics among disciplines, from psychiatry and psychoanalysis to education”.

The project outlined here aims at investigating the forms of the presence of classifications and diagnostics coming from Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis in educational discourses. How do the processes of incorporation of knowledges take place in these cases? What are the meanings that medical and psychological/psychoanalytical classifications assume when incorporated to education? We start from the hypothesis that such knowledges are often invoked to challenge pedagogical traditions and to legitimize innovations in educational practices.

The research takes as its initial timeframe the 1950s, extending up to our days, and making use of sources such as large circulation/dissemination psychology journals, journals specialized in psychiatry, psychoanalysis and education, and the various editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), in addition to psychology books targeted at teacher education. Much has already been said about the ways in which information from psychology, and scientific explanations in general, are circulated and appropriated. Large volume publications, the Internet, and other media place within the reach of large segments of the population which previously belonged to the domain of specialists.

As we know, new narratives take shape and contribute to change in a more or less rapid way the forms of educating and living together. Similarly, but in the specific terrain of scientific fields, the borders between disciplines have in many cases became more permeable, in other words, the transfers, integrations and translations, among other processes, take place more frequently and intensely, and the domains of knowledge are continuously reconfigured. Against the background of these observations we place the interest in the ways in which the attempts to medical (psychiatric) and psychotherapeutic denominations/classifications in a broad sense inhabit and shift within educational discourses.

The question is not new (Patto, 2000; Seixas, 2009; Lima, 2018 among others) and has been analyzed from different angles. A careful examination of the trajectory of incorporations of the areas cited above by education can, on the one hand, bring out evidences of the struggles between disciplines, and on the other hand, also evidences on the way in which of conceptual and theoretical assimilation in educational discourses. If we follow in the last 50 or 60 years the initiatives of denomination/classification/quantification present in psychology we can understand many of the instances of categories of classification and proposals of diagnostics derived for dealing with pupils in schools.

A careful study of configurations of diagnostic and educational questions associated to medical and pedagogical practices can benefit today, for example, from the examination of the circulation of these knowledges in specialized journals and also those targeted at the population at large (Mente e Cérebro, Psique etc). Thus, the hypothesis of selecting, for example, journals from psychiatry and psychology and journals from the area of education for the systematic study of the above-mentioned issues can be a productive means of understanding. In the same way, the analysis of psychology books today targeted at the education of teachers can help to clarify the processes described here. These sources can also supply evidences to help understanding how and why the relations between the two areas have flourished so strongly in education and often originating teaching practices whose results and impact upon the subjects/pupils are difficult to account for/evaluate. Borders and their mobility come to the fore in these propositions. Limits, escapes and counterpoints: borderlines, autistics and not suitable for integration.

Who are these subjects, who are the pupils often classified like that unjustly? Would it be possible to arrest the diagnostic wave, the impetus to classify, and then interact/discover/invent ways of dealing with subjects/pupils? Some of these objectives must guide the research outlined here. Therefore, this post-doc fellow will be dedicated to the following activities: (i) To identify in large circulation journals the ways in which information from psychology and psychiatry are disseminated and become no longer the domain of specialists. (ii) To examine the presence and appropriation of such sources within education through the study of pedagogical journals. (iii) To develop a fieldwork in France where the diagnostics of autism and attention deficit are the objects of many debates showing the interfaces articulated to political, school and psychoanalytical questions. It is therefore understood that the activities of this post-doc fellow will be conducted in articulation with the main researchers of Axis 3, without disconsidering the interfaces with the theoretical production of the other professors that comprise this Thematic Project.
