The Laboratory of Plant Virology, located at the Department of Plant Pathology and Nematology of University of São Paulo’s Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (ESALQ-USP), opens a post-doctoral fellowship for full-time activity in the sub-project “Attempts to identify field hosts of Tomato severe rugose virus through viral genomic sequences,” which is part of a Thematic Project entitled “Begomovirus and Crinivirus in Solanacea: Regional Molecular Epidemiology and Sustainable Alternatives to Integrated Management,” supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP).

    About the sub-project

In Brazil, begomoviruses are considered the main disease problems of viral origin in tomato crops. Several begomoviruses can infect tomato in Brazil. However, the Tomato severe rugose virus (ToSRV) transmitted by the Bemisia tabaci MEAM1 (biotype B), in a persistent circulative way, is the predominant virus. Besides tomato, this begomovirus infects plants of other solanaceae and weeds species. The question remains unanswered as for what would be the main source of ToSRV inoculum in the field. The conceptual model that is being applied in this thematic project is the existence of amplifier hosts, already recognized in the study of epidemics of zoonoses, but has never been applied to the study of plant diseases. The hypothesis is that in the absence of tomato in the field, ToSRV asymptomatic hosts and the vector would function as amplifiers of the disease. Thus, the main objective of this sub-project will be, through the use molecular biology tools, to try to identify possible source(s) of the ToSRV in the field and propose sustainable alternatives for the management not only of begomovirose, but of other vectorborne diseases. The following specific objectives will be studied: i) identify differences in the nucleotide sequences of ToSRV isolates from different hosts. ii) validate the protocol under experimental conditions. iii) perform genetic study of ToSRV populations in the field to validate the protocol.

The activities will take place at ESALQ-USP, in Piracicaba, São Paulo State, Brazil.
