  • Brazil and Spain in the FAPESP 50 years

The São Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP - is a taxpayer funded organization in São Paulo State, Brazil, that began its operations in 1962 with the mission of financing and supporting scientific research in all fields of human knowledge.

FAPESP is conscious that in the world today reaching higher levels of excellence in research activities will only be possible if there is intense exchange and extensive cooperation with groups from multiple countries.

To this end, FAPESP seeks to establish partnerships with similar agencies, higher education institutions and companies from several nationalities.

In Spain’s case, FAPESP sealed the first partnership with Salamanca University on November 25, 2011  with the objective of developing joint research projects that can include exchanges of researchers and post-graduate students.

Cooperation is conducted through joint research projects chosen by both institutions in all fields of knowledge and selected through calls for proposals.

To celebrate the first year of the agreement and as part of the commemorations of FAPESP’s  2012 Golden Jubilee, the two institutions are holding the Frontiers of Science Brazil and Spain Seminar in December.

The meeting will be held from December 10-12 on the campus of Salamanca University and will have a two-day version in Madrid on December 13-14 at Casa do Brasil.

The first day will be dedicated to human sciences, especially political sciences. The second day will focus on health and the third nanotechnology, materials science and photonics. Researchers form Brazil and Spain will participate in roundtables, discussing their recent research.

FAPESP will also inaugurate the “Brazilian Nature”  exhibit on biodiversity in Brazil, which will be open to the public at the University of Salamanca and Casa do Brasil in Madrid.
