Marcia Abreu holds a degree in literature from the University of Campinas (1984) and got her Ph.D. in Literary Theory at the same University (1993). She did postdoctoral work in Cultural History at the Ecole des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris (1996-1997) with Roger Chartier and became full professor in Brazilian literature at UNICAMP in 2002.

She teaches Literary History at UNICAMP and coordinates the project "The transatlantic circulation of printed matter - the globalization of culture in the 19th century", with Jean-Yves Mollier (Université de Versailles)

She has published several works, among which stand out the books Impresso no Brasil – dois séculos de livros brasileiros, org. with Aníbal Bragança (2010) – book which won the Prize Jabuti 2011 –; Cultura Letrada: literatura e leitura (2006); Os Caminhos dos livros (2003) e Histórias de Cordéis e Folhetos (1999). She organized the books Trajetórias do Romance: circulação, leitura e escrita nos séculos XVIII e XIX (2008); Cultura letrada no Brasil: objetos e práticas, org. with Nelson Schapochnik.
