Mariana Cabral de Oliveira received a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the Universidade de São Paulo (USP, University of São Paulo) in 1988. In 1993, she received a doctoral degree in botany from USP. From 1991 to 1992, she was an intern at the Canadian National Research Council Institute for Marine Biosciences.
Since 1994, Dr. Oliveira has worked in the USP Institute of Biosciences Botany Department, becoming full professor in 2015.
In 2000, Dr. Oliveira received the São Paulo State Medal of Scientific and Technological Merit, awarded by the governor, and the Cláudia Magazine Award, both for her contribution to the Xylella fastidiosa Genome Project. In 2003, she received the International Foundation for Science (IFS) Jubilee Award.
Dr. Oliveira works in the fields of phycology and molecular biology, focusing principally on the molecular phylogeny of algae and on genomics.
