Graduated in Nursing and Obstetrics by the Faculty of Medical Sciences - FCM/Unicamp in 1982, with residency in Nursing of the Locomotor Apparatus at the Hospital Sara Kubstschek, in Brasilia, 1983.

Has been in exterior twice, in the NIDDK/NIH, Bethesda Md, USA (1988 e 1992), did the Master (1989) and PhD (1996) in the Course of Functional and Molecular Biology, area of ​​Physiology, in the Biology Institute - IB/UNICAMP and Post-Doctorate at Miguel Hérnandez University of Elche, Spain (2003-2005).

As a professional activity, he was Director of the Nursing Division of the FCM Base Hospital of São José do Rio Preto (1984-85), Professor at the Institute of Biosciences, Department of Physical Education, UNESP, in Rio Claro (1986-99) and since 1999, is Professor of the Institute of Biology/UNICAMP, where he is Associate Director.

Over the last 20 years, he has established a solid line of research where he assesses the effects of protein/calorie malnutrition on the pathophysiology of obesity and diabetes. More specifically, it studies the molecular mechanisms involved in the loss of the mass and function of pancreatic islet cells, as well as their recovery from supplementation with different types of amino acids.

During his career, he published more than 235 papers in widely distributed indexed journals and his work has received 3115 citations with Factor H 33 (webofsciences) (until March, 2019), and Researcher CNPq (Comitê BFs). He had several projects approved by FAPESP and CNPq and directed 14 Scientific Initiations, 15 Masters, 19 Doctorates and 15 Post-Doctorates. Several of these students already hold teaching positions in universities in the country, and four of them are researchers at universities abroad. He collaborates with several research groups in the country and in Spain.
