Ricardo Hirata

Full Professor of the Institute of Geosciences at the University of São Paulo (USP), Director of Groundwater Research Center (CEPAS|USP) and Vice-President of the Brazilian Ground Waters Association (ABAS). He holds a bachelor's degree in Geology from São Paulo State University (UNESP, 1983) and a master's degree (1990) and a doctorate (1994) from USP, and a Postdoctoral degree from the University of Waterloo (Canada).

He was a consultant to UNESCO, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); member of the Groundwater Management Advisory Team of the World Bank (GW-Mate); and visiting professor at the universities of Calgary (Canada) and Costa Rica (CARA Canada-Costa Rica Program). He was a Senior Hydrogeologist at the Geological Institute of the Environment Secretariat (São Paulo), Hydrologist Resident of CEPIS - World Health Organization (Peru) and Hydrogeochemical Head of the Department of Water and Electric Energy (São Paulo).

Since 1984, he has been working intensively with water resources, environment, and groundwater in Brazil and 26 countries, advising governments, companies and multilateral agencies and working with universities and research centers.

He was named Honorary Citizen of Sucre (Bolivia) and Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) and Distinguished Hydrogeologist of Latin America (Latin American Association of Hydrogeology for Development, ALHSUD). He is a 1B Scholar Productivity Researcher of CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, Brazil)
