SPRINT 4th Edition 2017: Guidelines University of Illinois

Specific requests for proposals submissions from researchers of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

FAPESP and the University of Illinois signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research on April 13th, 2015, aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign, USA, and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects.

Under the referred Agreement, as a continuation of this fruitful collaboration, FAPESP and the University of Illinois make public this Call for Proposals for the exchange of faculty and postdoctoral researchers, under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 4th Edition 2017 (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call42017) and hereinafter set forth.

The Illinois Principal Investigator must provide a complete application that includes the Research Project as described below, as well as the Additional Documents and forms requested by FAPESP in the sections 6.2.1 a), c), d), e) and a copy of the Letter of Agreement as established in section 6.2.3 from the Sprint Call for Proposal at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call42017.

1. Eligibility from UIUC side

1.1. Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:

a. All University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) full time faculty, who are developing a research project with a faculty member in São Paulo. Open to all disciplines.

1.2. Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call:

a. Full time faculty, from all disciplines, as well as post-doctoral fellows included as participant in proposals submitted by the full time faculty.

b. Respecting the principle of reciprocity, FAPESP will also accept the participation of Ph.D. fellows in scientific missions. The Ph.D. fellows must have an ongoing FAPESP fellowship during the planned exchange mission.

Note:

  • The proposals must aim to respect the principle of reciprocity with regard to academic qualifications of those who will take part in the exchange activities.

  • Eligibility of research partners in the State of São Paulo should observe the items 3.1 and 4.2 of FAPESP call (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call42017).

2. Fields of knowledge

This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in all fields of knowledge.

3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers

The maximum duration of each project is up to 24 months.

4. Timeline

Call announced by FAPESP and UIUC

October 31st, 2017

Closing date for submission of proposals

January 29th, 2018

Successful proposals notified after

April 27th, 2018

5. Funding principles

5.1. FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of US$ 10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) per proposal per year and UIUC will provide funding of up to US$ 10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) per proposal per year, for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses, under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/9442).

5.2. FAPESP and UIUC will fund a maximum of 4 approved proposals.

6. Proposal characteristics for UIUC researchers:

University of Illinois faculty submitting proposals should follow the guidelines set forth for Lemann Institute Collaborative Research and Illinois/FAPESP Grants at www.clacs.illinois.edu/lemann/research.aspx#collaborative.

The proposal shall be composed of:

a. A Research Project having a maximum of five (5) pages of scientific content, written in English jointly by the Principal Investigator at the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo and the Principal Investigator at UIUC. One copy of the Research Project shall be sent to FAPESP and an identical copy to UIUC. The research Project must include the requirements disposed on item 6.1 at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call42017.

6.1 The following additional documents required by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign:

6.2.1 Letter of Agreement of the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo to which the PI from São Paulo is affiliated. The same document is required by FAPESP in item 6.2.3 at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call42017. The Letter of Agreement may be delivered after the notification of results of this call for proposals and before the grant agreement signature.

7. Submission of proposals to UIUC

Submissions can only be accepted by the Lemann Institute for Brazilian Studies at UIUC.

8. Result of the analysis

The results will be announced on FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) and University of Illinois Lemann Institute (www.clacs.illinois.edu/lemann) web portals and by means of a communication to the interested PIs.

9. Contract for selected projects by University of Illinois

Selected proposals will subject to the conditions set forth for Lemann Institute Collaborative Research and Illinois/FAPESP Grants: www.clacs.illinois.edu/lemann/research.aspx#collaborative.

10. Contract for selected projects by UIUC

Selected proposals will subject to the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the partner institution.

11. Grant cancellation

FAPESP or University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign may cancel funding if, during the grant timeframe, a significant event justifies its cancellation in the assessment of the Joint Steering Committee, without prejudice of any other appropriate actions.
