José is biologist and received an MsC (Cell and Molecular Biology, 2005) and PhD (Cell and Molecular Biology, 2009) degree from School of Medicine at University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. He was post-doctoral fellow at the Virology Research Center at University of São Paulo (2010 to 2012, Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil) and at School of Medicine of Washington University (Saint Louis, MO, USA).
Since 2015, José is professor in the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Bioagents, Institute of Biology at University of Campinas (Unicamp). Currently, he heads a Laboratory for study of human emergent viruses and coordinates a research about pathogenesis of human emergent viruses, such as Human Bocavirus (HBoV), Oropouche virus (OROV), Zika virus (ZIKV), La Crosse virus (LACV), Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and West Nile virus (WNV).
He published 26 papers in indexed journals and wrote a book chapter and a manual for nosocomial respiratory viruses infection.
