Center for Artificial Intelligence

FAPESP and IBM, through a cooperation agreement, will fund the Center for Artificial Intelligence, headquartered at the University of São Paulo (USP) and with the participation of associated institutions such as the Aeronautical Technology Institute (ITA), the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) and the Centro Universitário FEI.

The Center for Artificial Intelligence aims to develop basic research in various areas of artificial intelligence – machine learning, decision making, knowledge representation, natural language processing – and applied research with an initial focus on natural resources, agribusiness and health. The integration between those areas and their applications is one of the main objectives of the Centers.

The Center aims to take artificial intelligence (AI) to a new level, aiming at improving the quality of life in society. The Center will pursue scientific and technological advances, staff training, knowledge dissemination and technology transfer in AI.

The Center for Artificial Intelligence s part of FAPESP's Engineering Research Centers (CPE) program and is the first in Latin America to be part of the IBM IA Horizons Network (IAHN), created in 2016 to promote integration and collaboration among leading IBM universities, students, and researchers committed to accelerating the application of AI.

The Center is coordinated by Professor Fabio Gagliardi Cozman, from the Department of Mechatronics Engineering and Mechanical Systems at the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (Poli-USP).
