For decades, Brazil has been a major partner for Sweden in education, research and commerce. Many alumni of Uppsala University and Lund University hold relevant positions in Brazilian universities and vice versa and there is much research collaboration between the two countries. A current example of a strong research connection between Sweden and Brazil is the new synchrotron facility, MAX IV.

MAX IV is currently being built in Lund and will go into operation in 2016. Around 2018 the new Brazilian synchrotron radiation source, Sirius, which is placed in Campinas, will also go into operation. These two facilities will provide the World’s most brilliant radiation sources and will be essential to achieve new breakthroughs in materials science, leading to the development of novel technologies.

Within industry there is a lot of cooperation between Sweden and São Paulo; since the beginning of the 1900s, Swedish industry has established more than 200 companies in Brazil and this long-term commitment has led to São Paulo being considered the second largest Swedish industrial hub after Gothenburg.

Given this background of strong and focused cooperation and in the interest of furthering the ties between Sweden and São Paulo state the aims of the workshop between Uppsala and Lund University and FAPESP are to:

• Foster collaboration between Sweden and São Paulo state.

• Promote cooperation and exchange of research, technologies and experience between Sweden and São Paulo state.

• Strengthen existing links between the scientific communities in both countries and encourage the development of new forms of collaboration.
