Frontiers of Engineering

PURPOSE OF THE EVENT:

Taking place in São Paulo, Brazil on 6-8 November 2014, the Brazil-UK Frontiers of Engineering symposium is a partnership between the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) and the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) where four topics – Smart grids, Big data in healthcare, Bioremediation, and Oil and gas will be covered.  The overall co-chairs are Professor Euclides de Mesquita Neto of FAPESP and Professor Alison Noble FREng, Director of the Institute for Biomedical Engineering, University of Oxford.

This event will bring together 60 outstanding young engineers (aged 30-45) from industry, universities, and government labs to discuss leading-edge research and technical work across a range of engineering fields.  Convening engineers from disparate fields and challenging them to think about developments and problems at the frontiers of areas different from their own will potentially lead to a variety of desirable results.  These include collaborative work, the transfer of new techniques and approaches across fields, and establishment of contacts among the next generation of leaders in engineering.

The Frontiers of Engineering (FOE) program was developed by the U.S National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and at the request  of overseas entities, bilateral Frontiers of Engineering programs have been started with other countries: Germany (1998), Japan (2000), India (2006), China (2009), and the EU (2010).
