MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN

THE MARINE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY (Woods Hole, MA, USA), 

THE FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO (São Paulo, Brazil), and 

THE BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES INSTITUTE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SÃO PAULO (São Paulo, Brazil)

This Agreement is signed by GARY BORISY, President and Director of the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), by CELSO LAFER, President of the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP), and by RUI CURI, Director of the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas da Universidade de São Paulo (ICB-USP), with the aim of establishing a program of Short Schools to be offered in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.
 
1) ICB-USP and MBL will collaborate in presenting a series of short courses in advanced science themes related to areas of common interest between ICB-USP and MBL. The short courses, organized in schools, will contribute to the advance research training of the attendees and to establish in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, a hub for the attraction of young scientists worldwide.
 

a) Example areas include Embryology, Parasitology, Neurobiology and Molecular Evolution.

b) The duration of each school will be around 10 days.

c) These courses will be managed by the Director of Education – MBL, and a scientist chosen by ICB-USP.

d) Each course will have 2 co-directors, one drawn from MBL affiliated scientists and one from USP faculty.

e) Each course will have a mixed faculty chosen from MBL associated and Brazilian scientists.

f) The courses will have student bodies of around 50, half of which will be from Brazil and the other half of which will be international.

i) These students will typically be a mixture of post-doctoral and pre-doctoral fellows.

ii) The students will be chosen by the co-directors.

2) The costs of the collaborative project will be covered by a grant awarded by FAPESP to a Principal Investigator from ICB-USP under FAPESP file # 12/50116-2, and by funds from ICB-USP.

3) MBL will bring to the collaboration its institutional expertise in organizing such courses as well as time by the laboratory’s Director of Education..

4) The general structure of the course program as well as financial commitments will be reviewed during the second year of course presentations in preparation for a long term (5 year) grant proposal.

5) The Director of Education, MBL, plus a member indicated jointly by ICB-USP and FAPESP, will be designated as overseers of this program, and will be responsible for providing a yearly report of the activities carried out by participants of the program.

a) The report will be submitted to the respective officers from both institutions.

6) The duration of this Memorandum of Understanding will be two (2) years, and may be renewed under the same terms and conditions if both parties so agree and state it in writing six (6) months before its expiration date. Likewise, if both parties agree, they may terminate this Memorandum of Understanding in advance at any time. However, and regardless of the reasons for ending the Memorandum of Understanding, research projects or other scientific activities that may be in progress at that time will continue until the approved date for their conclusion.

7) In order to settle any doubts that may arise under the performance or in the construction of this Memorandum of Understanding, the parties shall exert their best efforts to reach a solution by mutual consent. In the event such consent is found to be impossible, the parties shall jointly appoint a third party person, to act as mediator.
