Call for Proposals - Strategic Research Collaboration within Food Science in the State of São Paulo, Brazil and Denmark – 2011

A collaboration between the Danish Council for Strategic Research

and

The State of São Paulo Research Foundation

Call for proposals for joint research collaboration under the Scientific Cooperation Agreement between Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo – FAPESP  and the Danish Council for Strategic Research – DCSR. The agreement can be found on www.fapesp.br/en/6331.

1. Introduction

Hereby, FAPESP and DCSR invite researchers from universities, research institutions and private companies in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, and Denmark conducting research within the food science area to apply for funding of joint Brazilian-Danish strategic research projects according to the present call.

The proposals must be prepared jointly by Brazilian and Danish proposers. In the State of São Paulo, Brazil, eligible researchers are Principal Investigators of ongoing or already concluded research projects funded by FAPESP within the following schemes: Regular Research Awards, Thematic Projects, Young Investigators, or Research, Innovation and Dissemination Centres (CEPIDs/RIDCs). The proposals submitted to this call by researchers in the State of São Paulo must necessarily be related to the aforementioned projects. The call is open for any Danish proposers who comply with the DCSR criteria for eligibility.

2. Purpose

For both countries it is of major importance to provide solutions by means of food science in order to accommodate challenges related to food and bioresources in a sustainable way. The aim of this call is that the funded projects are able to deliver considerable and tangible results at the end of the project period.

This call is to define the terms and conditions for the submission of joint proposals.  FAPESP and DCSR will jointly support up to three research projects under this call.

This call is being announced simultaneously by FAPESP and DCSR at:

FAPESP: www.fapesp.br/en/6372

DCSR: www.fi.dk/dsf

3. Research topics

This call invites joint research proposals within the following research topics:

1. New and improved production methods, systems and technologies for sustainable biological production, especially food production, for example by means of increased use and integration of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and robotics.

2. Health promoting food components and their interaction with food processing provided by bioprocessing technologies.

3. Production of sustainable raw materials and food products that address climate changes and that may open new markets for the biological production.

4. Food quality and safety in fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy products including residue analyses.

5. Healthy food for hospitals and schools based on “Indigenous products” e.g. New Nordic cuisine and New Amazonian Cuisine respectively including food diversity and transforming W2V (waste-to-value).

6. Improved genetics and breeds of crops and livestock suitable for different farming systems including the use of biotechnological and molecular methods for selection and breeding.

7. Livestock health and welfare including non-antibiotic preventive measures against multi-factorial diseases.

8. Soil fertility management and nutrient supply in low input and organic systems including innovative use of nitrogen fixating crops.

9. Integrated and multifunctional crop-livestock systems for improved overall productivity, resource efficiency, animal welfare and biodiversity.

10. Development of high value market chains from alternative production systems for example organic and agro-ecology.

11. Emerging technologies in the food/chemical industries and environmental processes.

12. Microbial interactions and process modelling.

13. Improved use of biodiversity as alternative food crops.

14. Integration of “omics” data to translate to crop management and pathogen-free food derivatives.

15. IPM (Integrated Pest Management) for fruit and vegetable production.

4. Funding principles and project duration

FAPESP and DCSR expect to jointly fund up to three projects with a total cost (sum of costs to FAPESP and DCSR) of around four million US dollars. Funding can cover research and mobility expenses (payroll expenses, research training, equipment, travel costs, living allowances, and insurance costs) according to each institution’s guidelines. The duration of the proposed research projects should be 36 (thirty six) months.

5. Proposal format

Apart from any specific institutional requirements either of FAPESP or DCSR (which are available locally, please refer to the respective institutional websites, according to sections 2 and 6 of this call), the proposal, submitted in English, shall contain (forms availiable in www.fapesp.br/acordos-dcsr-forms):

A) Summary of the Principal Investigator’s CV with a maximum of two pages.

B) Budget worksheets for both FAPESP and DCSR, discriminated separately.

C) Research project description with a maximum of ten pages of scientific content, including the following items:

1) Summary of the research project to which the proposal is related, including current and expected results.

2) Description of the added value and synergy of the collaboration.

3) Description of each researcher and institution involved on both sides.

4) Description of the expected academic gains for the project as a result of the proposed collaboration.

5) Details of the activities foreseen in the collaboration, including justification, relevance, and impact.

6) Description of infrastructure and other financial resources available for developing the research project.

7) Actions to add to the impact of the collaboration by means of seminars, short courses, and visits to other research institutions.

8) Timeline of the entire project.

9) Possible actions to promote future participation in multinational projects.

6. Submission of proposals
