About BIOEN Workshop on Synthetic Biology Versão em português

BIOEN periodically organizes workshops at FAPESP’s main office to discuss different aspects of science and technology in Bioenergy. We should be grateful to invite you to the BIOEN Workshop in Synthetic Biology, which will take place on October 26, 2010, from 9 am to 6 pm at the Auditorium of the School of Economics and Business Administration (FEA 5) of University of São Paulo (USP).

Renowned lecturers interested in cooperative activities with Brazil will take part of the event (please refer to program below). The meeting stands for an opportunity to promote interdisciplinary research in Systems and Synthetic Biology and discuss the technological roadmap for the use of plants and microorganisms in the production of new biomaterials and biofuels.

Acting through the São Paulo Research Foundation, the State of São Paulo has made major investments in research towards the production of biofuels and bioenergy. Among other projects, the foundations has funded the Bioenergy Research Program – BIOEN (http://bioenfapesp.org), which supports hundreds of researchers in several universities as well as research centers in São Paulo. These investments are promoted from a long-lasting tradition of the state of São Paulo in the production and use of bioethanol derived from sugarcane and the need to expand such production on a sustainable basis.

Synthetic Biology is devoted to the construction of new biological systems and components or the redesign of natural systems. Synthetic Biology uses parts shaped by the evolutive process in order to build artificial systems that perform new tasks. The Systemic Biology is aimed at understanding organisms in their totality by modeling the dynamic relationships between their functional parts (genes, RNAs, proteins, metabolites, regulatory networks, environment perception, adaptation mechanisms, etc.). The fast convergence of several areas of science such as genetics, biotechnology, nanotechnology, mathematics, and metabolic engineering towards the design of systems of interest allows us to state that within less than one decade the knowledge about parts and diagrams concerned with the connection of biological systems will be able to create new cells with stable, well-known behavior, with predefined functions. Within this context, the BIOEN Workshop in Synthetic Biology is placed in the boundaries of knowledge, focusing on research aimed at creating new scientific paradigms with application to Bioenergy.

Your participation will be largely appreciated as it may contribute to the development of new initiatives in SynBio in Brazil.
