Ignácio Maria Poveda Velasco

Full Professor of Legal History, Law School, University of São Paulo (FD-USP). Currently Secretary-General, University of São Paulo. Former Dean, University of São Paulo’s Ribeirão Preto Law School (FDRP-USP, 2007-2013). Former member of University of São Paulo’s University Council (2007-13) and Chair of FD-USP’s Graduate Studies Committee (2003-07).

Bachelor’s degree in law from FD-USP (1982). Master’s degree (1990) and doctoral degree (1996) in Roman law from FD-USP. Former postdoctoral fellow at Sapienza University of Rome (1996-97). Habilitation in Legal History & Roman Law from FD-USP (2000). Promoted by competition to Full Professor of FD-USP in 2003. Member of FD-USP’s Senate since 1993. Professor of undergraduate and graduate studies (master’s and doctoral degrees) at FD-USP.

Taught Roman law and legal history at FIEO (1988-90) and UNG (1999-2003). Leader of CNPq-registered Research Group Direto das Fontes (“Direct from the Sources”, working with legal history from the perspective of using sources to study this field in depth) and of Contemporary Civil Law Study Group (discussing fundamental contemporary topics in civil law in light of its history, cultural roots and epistemology), also registered with CNPq.

Experience in the field of law, especially legal history and Roman law, with emphasis on the following topics: Roman contract law, especially sale-purchase; Roman procedural law, especially debtor protection (beneficium competentiae); ancient and medieval legal history, with emphasis on the study of sources; Brazilian legal history, particularly family law, land tenure and Brazilian legal historiography; modern civil law, especially family law and obligations. Author of five books, eleven book chapters and more than 20 articles in Brazilian and foreign law journals, among other published works in the legal field.
