SPRINT 4th Edition 2017: Guidelines West Virginia University

Specific requests for proposal submissions from researchers of West Virginia University (WVU)

FAPESP and West Virginia University, signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research on November 5th, 2014, aimed at implementing scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from West Virginia University, USA, and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects. This call for proposals focuses specifically on projects in the Humanities and the Arts.

Under the referred Agreement, as a first action to promote such collaboration, FAPESP and WVU make public this Call for Proposals for the exchange of faculty under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 4th Edition 2017 (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call42017) and hereinafter set forth.

1. Eligibility from WVU side

1.1.  Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:

a. All tenure-track and non-tenure track faculty are eligible to apply.

b. WVU will only accept one proposal per faculty member (serving as either PI or Co-PI).

1.2. Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call:

a. The team members eligible for exchange activities include:

i) Principal Investigators or Co-Principal Investigators.

Note:

  • The proposals must aim to respect the principle of reciprocity with regard to academic qualifications of those who will take part in the exchange activities, i.e. if a WVU PI goes to Brazil, then we expect that that a Sao Paulo PI would visit WVU.

  • Eligibility of research partners in the State of São Paulo should observe the items 3.1 and 4.2 of FAPESP call (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call42017).

2. Fields of knowledge

This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in Humanities and the Arts.

3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers

The maximum duration of each project is 12 months.

4. Timeline

Call announced by FAPESP and WVU

October 31st, 2017

Closing date for submission of proposals

January 29th, 2018

Successful proposals notified after

April 27th, 2018

5. Funding principles

5.1.  FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of US$ 10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) per proposal per year and WVU will provide funding of up to US$ 10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) per proposal per year, for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses, under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/9088).

5.2.  FAPESP and WVU will fund a maximum of 1 approved proposal.

6. Proposal characteristics for WVU researchers

The proposal shall be composed of:

a. A Research Project having a maximum of five (5) pages of content, written in English jointly by the Principal Investigator at the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo and the Principal Investigator at WVU.

b. One copy of the Research Project shall be sent to FAPESP and an identical copy to WVU. Research is broadly construed to include research and creative and scholarly activities.

6.1. The Research Project must include the following items:

a. Summary/abstract of the project, including expected results;

b. Statement of the goals and objectives of the project;

c. Background and rationale for the project. Why is it important? What will be the contribution to the area?

d. What are the compelling reasons that this project should be undertaken?

e. What is the synergy of the Sao Paulo and WVU teams working together? What expertise do each of the partners bring to the collaboration?

f. Details of the activities to be completed in the project. What are the planned activities, including joint research to be conducted?

g. . Detailed schedule of the exchange missions to be carried out by the partner team at the São Paulo institution and the São Paulo team at the partner institution;

h. What are the benefits and scholarly gains to WVU and to the university/institution in Sao Paulo of the project?

i. What are the expected results? What are the performance indicators/metrics that will be measured to ensure the success of the project?

j. What are the plans for sustaining the research beyond the period of this support?

k. Description of infrastructure and financial resources available for developing the research project in São Paulo, Brazil and WVU, excluding the expenses requested in the proposal.

6.2. The following additional documents required by WVU (not subject to the 5-page limit):

6.2.1 Budget for the researchers including travel, living expenses, research related supplies/activities and personnel costs. Note that an equal number of exchange visits between partners is expected and the Sao Paulo Institution can only use funds for travel related expenses.

6.2.2 CVs of the WVU PI and Co-PIs and their counterparts from the State of São Paulo.

6.2.3 Letter of Agreement of the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo to which the PI from São Paulo is affiliated. The same document is required by FAPESP in item 6.2.3 at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call42017. The Letter of Agreement may be delivered after the notification of results of this call for proposals and before the grant agreement signature.

7. Submission of proposals to WVU

WVU faculty should to submit full proposals to deanna.whorton@mail.wvu.edu with the subject line SPRINT_FAPESP_WVU in the subject line and researchers from the State of Sao Paulo should submit identical copies to FAPESP. Proposals submitted to only one party will not be considered. Once received, an electronic notification will be sent to the applicant acknowledging receipt.

8. Evaluation criteria and result of the analysis

8.1. The evaluation criteria include:

a. Quality and innovativeness of the project plan;

b. Feasibility of the project plan;

c. Competence and expertise of the applicants from both countries;

d. Added value generated by WVU-Brazilian collaboration.

8.2. Proposals that do not comply with the terms of this Call will not qualify for analysis;

The results will be announced on FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) and WVU (http://research.wvu.edu) web portals and by means of a communication to the PIs.

9. Contract for selected projects by WVU

The selected proposals will be the subject of an agreement between the PI and WVU.

10. Grant cancellation

FAPESP or WVU may cancel funding if, during the grant timeframe, a significant event justifies its cancellation in the assessment of the Joint Steering Committee, without prejudice of any other appropriate actions.
