SPRINT 4th Edition 2017: Guidelines University of Miami

Specific requests for proposals submissions from researchers of the University of Miami

FAPESP and University of Miami (UM), signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research on October 14th, 2014, aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from UM, USA, and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects.

Under the referred Agreement, as a continuation of this fruitful collaboration, FAPESP and UM make public this Call for Proposals for the exchange of faculty and postdoctoral researchers under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 4th Edition 2017 (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call42017) and hereinafter set forth.

1. Eligibility from UM side

1.1. Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:

a. Principal Investigators must be regular faculty and/or full-time research faculty members with existing or new research collaborations with researchers in São Paulo, Brazil, and must maintain this status for the duration of the proposed activities.

1.2. Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call:

a. Principal Investigators as well as Associated Researchers from UM (Coral Gables Campus only) who are directly involved in an ongoing or new research project. Participating UM postdoctoral fellows and PhD students must be UM employees or students in good standing during the planned exchange mission.

(i) Considering the principle of reciprocity, FAPESP exceptionally may either support PhD students from São Paulo state to take part in the scientific missions. In this case, the PhD student(s) must have an ongoing FAPESP fellowship during the planned exchange mission to the partner institution.

Note:

  • The proposals must aim to respect the principle of reciprocity with regard to academic qualifications of those who will take part in the exchange activities.

  • Eligibility of research partners in the State of São Paulo should observe the items 3.1 and 4.2 of FAPESP call (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call42017).

2. Fields of knowledge

This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in all fields of knowledge.

3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers

The maximum duration of each project is 24 months, non-extendable. Projects shorter than 12 months will not be considered.

4. Timeline

Call announced by FAPESP and UM

October 31st, 2017

Closing date for submission of proposals

January 29th, 2018

Successful proposals notified after

April 27th, 2018

5. Funding principles

5.1. FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of US$ 10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) per proposal per year and UM will provide funding of up to US$ 10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) per proposal per year, for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses, under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/9438).

5.2. FAPESP and UM will fund a maximum of 2 approved proposals.

6. Proposal characteristics for UM researchers

The proposal shall be composed of:

a. A Research Project having a maximum of five (5) pages of scientific content, written in English jointly by the Principal Investigator at the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo and the Principal Investigator at the UM. One copy of the Research Project shall be sent to FAPESP and an identical copy to the UM.

6.1. The UM Principal Investigator must provide a complete application that includes:

6.1.1. Cover Sheet

6.1.2. Research Proposal, as described at item 6.a. of the CFP, including:

a. Goals/Objectives of the research collaboration;

b. Detailed activity description;

c. Benefits of/Requirement for the external collaboration;

d. Budget and detailed budget justification;

e. Plans for sustained activity after the funding period is over;

f. Proposals should be written in Arial, 11pts, no less than 1 line spacing, and 0,5” margins;

g. Supporting Material (e.g. images, letters of support, etc.)

6.2 The following additional document required by UM:

6.2.2. Letter of Agreement of the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo to which the PI from São Paulo is affiliated. The same document is required by FAPESP in item 6.2.3 at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call42017. The Letter of Agreement may be delivered after the notification of results of this call for proposals and before the grant agreement signature. We encourage applications to use the following Letters of Agreement that have previously been executed by awardees in previous cycles.

7. Submission of proposals to UM

UM requires the completed application to be saved as a single PDF file and uploaded to the InfoReady Review website at the following link: https://miami.infoready4.com/#manageCompetitionsDetail/1763845, by the proposal deadline.

8. Result of the analysis

The results will be announced on FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) web portals and by means of a communication to the interested PIs.

9. Grant cancellation

FAPESP or UM may cancel funding of a UM researcher, if, during the grant timeframe, a significant event justifies its cancellation in the assessment of the Joint Steering Committee, without prejudice of any other appropriate actions.
