Specific requests for proposal submissions from researchers of the Heriot-Watt University (HWU)

FAPESP and the Heriot-Watt University (HWU), signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research on April 8, 20154 aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from the HWU, the United Kingdom, and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects.

Under the referred Agreement, as a third action to promote such collaboration, FAPESP and HWU make public this Call for Proposals for the exchange of researchers, under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 1st Edition 2015 (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call12016) and hereinafter set forth.

1. Eligibility from HWU side:

1.1 Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:

a. Members of academic staff within the following HWU Schools:

School of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS)
School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure & Society (EGIS)
School of Life Sciences (SLS)
School of Mathematics and Computer Science (MACS)

1.2 Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call:

a. With endorsement of the appropriate Head of School.

1.3 The proposals must aim to respect the principle of reciprocity with regard to academic qualifications of those who will take part in the exchange activities.

1.4 Eligibility of research partners in the State of São Paulo should observe the items 3.1 and 7.1 of FAPESP call (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call12016).

2. Fields of knowledge

This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in fields of science and technology as applied to:

- Energy;
- Public Health/Food;
- Environment.

3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers

The maximum duration of each project is up to 24 months and a minimum of 12 months, non-extendable.

5. Funding principles

5.1 FAPESP will provide funding of up to £10,000.00  (Ten Thousand Pounds Sterling) per proposal per year and HWU will provide funding of up to £10,000.00  per proposal per year, for supporting up to five (5) approved proposals and for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses (air tickets and living allowances), under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/8540).

6. Proposal Characteristics

6.1 The proposal shall be composed of:

a. A Research Project having a maximum of five (5) pages of scientific content, written jointly by the Principal Investigator of the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo and the Principal Investigator at the HWU. The Research Project must be written in English. One copy of the Research Project shall be sent to FAPESP and another (identical) copy to the HWU.

b. Submission forms and additional documents:

(i) Research partners in the State of São Paulo should observe the item 6.2 of FAPESP call (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call12016).

(ii) Applicants from HWU must submit the documents required in the item 6.3 below.

6.2 The Research Project must include the following:

a. A substantive description of the exchange activities, emphasizing their relevance. The proposal must state clearly how the exchange activities to be carried out will contribute to the ongoing research project funded by FAPESP and to the research being carried by the partner researcher in the HWU;

b. A timeline for each specific exchange mission, considering the limit of missions and funding established in this Call;

c. Performance indicators for the planned activities;

d. A description of each candidate’s contribution to the mission, explaining their expertise to carry out the foreseen activities;

e. Foreseen actions that will add to the impact of the exchange for the HWU and for the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo, e.g. by means of seminars, short courses and visits to other institutions that carry out research activities in cognate areas.

6.3. In addition to the above referred research project, the proposal for the HWU must include the following items:

a. Written endorsement of Head of School.

b. A clear statement on the plans for further research proposals and collaboration outside this funding agreement, e.g. Newton Fund, EPSRC, EC-H2020, ERC.

c. Letter of Agreement with the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo to which the PI from São Paulo is affiliated. The Letter of Agreement can be delivered after the notification of results. The same document is required by FAPESP in item 6.2.3 at xxxx.

7. Submission of proposals to HWU

Submissions can only be accepted by Worktribe and you should have your application(s) approved in Worktribe before the deadline of April 25, 2016.

8. Result of the analysis

Final results will be announced on FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) and HWU (www.hw.ac.uk) web portals and by means of a communication to the interested PIs.

9. Contract for selected projects by HWU

Selected proposals will subject to the conditions set forth in a letter of award.

10. Grant cancellation

FAPESP or HWU may cancel funding if, during the grant timeframe, a fact is of sufficient gravity to justify cancellation, without prejudice of any other appropriate actions.
